Finding Your Fit: What Is IOP Therapy, PHP, and Outpatient Care in Austin

If you or your teen have been told it’s time for “a higher level of care,” that phrase can feel more confusing than reassuring. What does it actually mean, and how do you know which path is right for your family? At The Timothy Center, we hear this question often: What is IOP therapy, how does it differ from PHP, and how do both compare to regular counseling?

These three levels of care sit on a spectrum, from occasional support to a fully structured daily program, and part of our job as your mental health home is helping you find the one that fits where you are right now, body, mind, and spirit.

What Is IOP Therapy?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is treatment that’s more involved than a weekly counseling appointment but still lets you live at home and stay connected to daily life. Our Intensive Outpatient Program in Austin typically involves a minimum of nine hours of treatment a week, spread across several days, so you can keep working, attending school, or caring for your family while getting consistent, structured support.

IOP is built for people managing moderate mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder who need more than a weekly session but don’t require around-the-clock supervision. Programs typically run 8 to 12 weeks and include individual and group therapy, psychoeducation, family therapy, and medication management where needed, all grounded in the same evidence-based, faith-informed care that shapes everything we do. We offer separate tracks for adults 18 and older and for teens ages 14 to 18, because a 15-year-old and a 35-year-old are carrying different burdens, even when the symptoms look similar on paper.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A Partial Hospitalization Program is the next step up in intensity. It’s still not an inpatient stay, but it asks for a much bigger daily commitment. Our teen PHP in Austin meets Monday through Thursday from 12 to 6 p.m. and Friday from 12 to 5 p.m., combining individual therapy, group sessions, and multi-family group therapy built around approaches like CBT and DBT skills, alongside the spiritual and psychological care that makes our approach to healing a whole-person one.

Because PHP requires this level of structure, it’s meant for teens whose symptoms are disrupting daily life significantly and who need extra support to stabilize before stepping down to something less intensive. A mental health diagnosis and a clinical assessment are part of getting started, since that establishes medical necessity for treatment planning and insurance. Our Partial Hospitalization Program page walks through the full weekly structure and what to expect from intake to completion, if you’d like to see it in more detail.

How Outpatient Therapy Compares

Traditional outpatient therapy, whether that’s individual counseling, couples counseling, or family sessions, is the lightest touch of the three. It’s a good fit when you’re working through a specific struggle or navigating life’s normal weight, but you don’t need daily or near-daily structure. Many families also use outpatient therapy as a step-down after finishing PHP or IOP, continuing the work at a gentler pace once things feel steadier.

There isn’t one “best” level of care for everyone. There’s the level that meets you where you are. Someone managing situational anxiety may do well with weekly sessions and prayerful support along the way. Someone whose depression is starting to interfere with work or school might need the structure of an IOP. A teen who’s struggling more deeply may need the fuller support of PHP first.

Choosing the Right Level of Care for Your Family

A few questions can help clarify where to start:

  • Is daily functioning, like going to work, attending school, or maintaining relationships, becoming difficult?
  • Has weekly therapy stopped feeling like enough support?
  • Does a mental health concern feel moderate but manageable, or is it becoming a daily struggle to get through?
  • Would your teen benefit from a structure that involves the whole family, not just individual sessions?

You don’t have to sort this out alone, and you don’t have to share our faith to be welcome here. A comprehensive assessment with our clinical team is the starting point for every level of care we offer, and that conversation is really where the right fit gets decided.

A note if you’re in crisis: IOP and PHP are designed for ongoing, structured support, not emergency care. If you or someone you love is in immediate danger or having thoughts of suicide, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room right away.

FAQ

Can someone move between levels of care?
Yes. It’s common to start at a higher level, like PHP, and step down to IOP or outpatient therapy as symptoms stabilize. Our clinical team helps plan that transition rather than leaving a family to figure it out alone.

Does insurance cover IOP and PHP?
The Timothy Center accepts most major insurance carriers, and our team works with each family to understand coverage and build a plan around it before treatment starts.

Is there an age requirement for these programs?
Yes. IOP is offered in two tracks: adults 18 and older, and teens ages 14 to 18 who are still in high school. PHP at The Timothy Center is currently offered for teens only.

What happens after finishing PHP?
Many teens transition into IOP as a step down, continuing to build on the skills they developed in PHP with a lighter, more flexible schedule. It’s a gradual return to daily life rather than an abrupt end to support.

Do I need to share your faith to participate?
No. The Timothy Center’s doors are open to everyone, regardless of religious background, and every family is met with the same compassionate, evidence-based care.
